London, 20th May 2024: A+E Networks EMEA has commissioned a ninth series of Crimes That Shook Britain from Title Role Productions, which will air on Crime+Investigation in September.

The eight-part series - once again featuring Crime+Investigation favourite, Dermot Murnaghan - will uncover the truth behind crimes that have shocked the nation, as told by friends, family, and the detectives charged with bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Dermot Murnaghan, said: “I’m delighted to be part of this latest series of Crimes That Shook Britain – a format that always remembers, first and foremost, to give the victims a voice through the testimony of their loved ones. What attracts me most to the programme is the quality and sensitivity of the storytelling. The producers – Title Role – are the best in the business regarding duty of care and narrative. This series examines some of the most high-profile cases of recent times – such as the murders of Brianna Ghey and Elle Edwards – many of which I reported on at the time as a news anchor. The producers have gained exclusive access to some of the investigating officers in the cases and friends and family members of the victims appearing on camera for the first time. “

Every episode of the series explores the dark recesses of some of Britain’s most inexplicable and disturbing recent crimes.

These include:

  • The murder of 26-year-old beautician Elle Edwards, caught in the crossfire of a gangland revenge killing outside a pub on The Wirral on Christmas Eve 2022.
  • Transgender teen Brianna Ghey was murdered for being “different” by two 15-year-olds who lured her to a Warrington Park in February 2023 before stabbing her twenty-eight times.
  • West London mother of two, Shakira Spencer, was abused and treated like a slave by her neighbours before they inflicted fatal injuries and left her for dead in September 2022.
  • Bar worker, Iuliana Tudos, tied up and tortured to death in Finsbury Park on Christmas Eve 2017, whose killer (Kasim Lewis) admitted to killing 55-year-old Catherine Burke a month earlier in her own home.
  • The entirely unprovoked Reading Park stabbings of James Furlong, David Wails, and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett in June 2020 by a 26-year-old Libyan refugee, plus the spate of deaths caused by American Bully XL attacks, including 10-year-old Jack Lis, mauled to death so savagely in Caerphilly in November 2021 that his mother could only identify him by his shoe.

For Title Role, the series is executive produced by Helen Tonge, and the series is produced by Rob Kelly.

Dan Korn, VP of Programming at A+E Networks EMEA, said: “We’re delighted to have Dermot and Crimes That Shook back for a ninth season.    It’s brilliantly produced by Title Role and unflinching in its honesty and commitment to telling the story behind the headlines through the eyes of those most intimately affected”.

Helen Tonge from Title Role said: “We are incredibly proud of ‘Crimes That Shook Britain’ and what it stands for. For nine series now, we have been leading the way in telling extremely sensitive stories with integrity and respect.  We are thrilled to be collaborating with Dermot and the team at C+I again.”

Crimes That Shook Britain series 9 will premiere in the UK on Crime+Investigation and Crime+Investigation PLAY in September. It will also premiere in the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, and on Crime+Investigation’s Pan-European channel in Autumn 2024.
